The Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Charles Mhango, today presided over a Breakfast Meeting organised by the Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) at the Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC).
During the event, the Minister presented certificates of appreciation to the outgoing MHRC Commissioners, recognising their dedicated service and contribution to the promotion and protection of human rights in Malawi. He personally signed the certificates as part of the official presentation ceremony.
The gathering brought together government officials, development partners, and other stakeholders to reflect on the Commission’s achievements and acknowledge the Commissioners’ commitment to advancing human rights.
In his remarks, Mhango commended the Commissioners for their service and encouraged continued collaboration among institutions in strengthening the rule of law, safeguarding rights, and promoting justice for all Malawians.
The event concluded with the presentation of certificates and a renewed pledge to uphold human rights and good governance in the country.
MHRC is a constitutional body established under Section 129 of the Constitution of Malawi. Its primary role is to promote, protect, and investigate violations of human rights, making it one of the country’s key independent institutions safeguarding democracy and the rule of law.
Its operations are guided by the Human Rights Commission Act (1998), which details its functions, powers, and responsibilities.
It is an independent National Human Rights Institution (NHRI), meaning it operates free from direct government control, though it collaborates with state institutions.
