‘Legal minds key to Malawi 2063 execution’

Minister of Justice Titus Mvalo has underscored the importance of the law profession in implementation of aspirations under the Malawi 2063, a long-term national development plan which succeeded Vision 2020.

He was speaking in Mangochi over the weekend at Malawi Law Society’s Annual General Meeting. Mvalo said for the three pillars of the vision [Agricultural Productivity and Commercialisation, Industrialisation and Urbanisation] to be achieved, there is a need for all sectors of the country to help with the enablers which the agenda has.

"One of the enablers is effective governance systems and institutions. So, I called upon the profession to zero in on this enabler by helping government to improve governance systems and institutions through improvement and enforcement of our laws" he said.

On effective governance systems and institutions, the Malawi 2063 blueprint says this shall be guided by the key principles of good governance including citizen engagement and rule of law, among others. Old Mutual Chief Executive Officer Edith Jiya, who was the guest of honour at the event, reflected on how the legal profession could look at the future in dealing with social ills such as corruption.

"The legal fraternity, being a profession that inherently requires high ethical standards, has a lot to offer to financial services sector by supporting organisations with their regulatory obligations and promoting high standards of ethical behaviour within those organisations" Jiya said.

Newly elected President of the society Patrick Mpaka expressed commitment towards helping the country in achieving its goals in good governance, economic development and any other sector that they may come in.

"We will make sure that we follow the law and ensure its enforcement" he said.
