Court Convicts 7 for Henious Murder

The High Court of Malawi in Lilongwe, Criminal Division, has convicted seven men for the gruesome murder of a truck driver and his assistant in 2014 when they were transporting 151 bales of flue cured tobacco from Mchinji to Blantyre.

The murderers, the court presided over by Justice Fiona Mwale learnt, ambushed the driver Feston Fendison Ndau and Chikaiko Yakobe Mbewe along the way and their bodies were found abandoned in the truck, their hands tied up, cloths stuffed in their mouths, cuts in the head and the bales of tobacco stolen.

Liness Chikankheni and Grace Wasiri, principal state advocates in the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP), prosecuted the matter and 13 State witnesses were paraded, after which, the Court examined the evidence thoroughly and found the accused persons, Harry Saka and others, guilty and convicted them accordingly.

One more person is on the run and the Court, pronouncing the convictions last Wednesday, ordered the Malawi Police Service to intensify their search to arrest him. Five defense lawyers turned up and represented different accused persons.

The convictions give relief to the families of the victims and serves as a deterrent to potential criminals. The verdict also marks a significant milestone in the pursuit of justice for the victims and their loved ones.

Senior State Advocate Mathews Chione commended his colleagues for a job well done to secure the convictions: “Our remaining task will now to plead for tough sentences to complement the great work of the two advocates.”

The Court will soon pass the sentences.
