Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Charles Mhango, today received a delegation from Irish Rule of Law International (IRLI) during a courtesy call aimed at deepening collaboration and exploring continued support for Malawi’s justice sector.
The meeting, held at the Ministry’s headquarters at Capital Hill in Lilongwe, focused on key priorities including access to justice, human rights, capacity building, justice sector reforms, and sustainable programming.
The IRLI delegation outlined the organisation’s five‑year strategic direction and reaffirmed its commitment to supporting justice institutions and personnel in sustaining reforms that promote fairness, accountability, and quality service delivery.
Mhango expressed appreciation for IRLI’s technical and financial support over the years, noting its impact on strengthening the capacity of justice officers and improving service delivery.
“The support has strengthened the capacity of justice sector officers and contributed to improved service delivery,” he said.
He further underscored government’s commitment to ensuring justice is accessible to all citizens, particularly those in rural and underserved communities.
“Some local courts are located far from the communities they serve, while others have remained unused for years due to challenges including inadequate infrastructure, lack of judicial personnel, and accommodation constraints,” the Minister observed.
He disclosed that government, through the Judiciary, is exploring the use of development resources to improve local court infrastructure while ensuring the deployment of magistrates, clerks, and other essential personnel.
Reaffirming the Ministry’s commitment, Mhango pledged to continue working closely with IRLI and other development partners to advance access to justice, human rights, and the rule of law in Malawi.
